The Black History Month is celebrated in most cities in February. It’s a memorial to the slave trade and that it’s a huge issue until today and no one should forget about that ever. Erlangen is hosting the Black History Week right now. There are different Events about black culture or their history.
This years motto is „The consequences of the transnational slave trade in Africa, Europe and America“. For the second time the „Black History Weeks of the African Diaspora“ is set from 20th September to 11th November 2016. Concerts, readings, lectures and exhibitions call attention to the meaning of the African Diaspora in Germany. Besides there will be other European and African countries discussed.
The idea for the Black History Weeks came from the councilor of Erlangen Misses Dr. Herzberger Fonana. From 2015 to 2024 UN is obligated to support recognition, rights and development of people with African origins and to fight racism.
18th October 2016: Mende Nazer. At 20:00 pm. The author and human rights activist talks about er past as a slave in Sudan an England and her escape.
31st October 2016 to the end of the Black History Weeks there is the exhibition „Hidden heroes“ at the town hall.
31st October 2016: Katharina Oguntoye, historian and head of JOLIBA – Interkulturelles Netzwerk in Berlin e.V. She is reporting her book „An Afro-German history: About life situation of Africans and Afro-Germans in Germany from 1884 to 1950“
11th November 2016: Sister Fa. The Senegalese musician and activist Fatou Mandiang Diatte ends the Black History Weeks with a concert. It starts at 21:00 pm. Admission fee is 5 Euro, reduced 3 Euro.
Every other Event is free.
