Yvonne Mwale has been successfully traveling through Germany since 2015, appearing at many festivals and yet has still found the time to make new recordings. They’ll be appearing under the title “Msimbi Wakuda”. While her last album was immediately recorded after her move to Germany, Yvonne Mwale has now arrived in her new home country, stable in her surroundings and musically further matured.
Yvonne Mwale has been working on the twelve tracks of her now third solo album “Msimbi Wakuda” for more than two years . An album has come out, which is even more honest, more profound and more mature than its predecessors. In it, acoustic sounds dominate unequivocably.
On most tracks guitar, contrabass and percussion sounds are to the fore and illustrate how diverse Yvonne Mwale’s compositions are. At the same time, she has processed the first impressions of European music production and tonally reflects more on her home country – but, always with the aim to skillfully enhance traditional music of Zambia, with influences from other directions, even impromptu music.
Beside her long-serving percussionist Mohamed Twaba from Tanzania, recently two musicians from the Frankfurt scene have had a grave impact on the interpretations of Mwale’s compositions. Here, rock drummer Thomas Rath (Jocco Abendroth, crackers, Laith Al-Deen), who also indicates to play a lot of percussion music, together with guitarist Tilmann Höhn (Frankfurt City Blues Band, Hotel Bossa Nova), are developing a different kind of „ psychedelic music“.
You can read a detailed report on her release concert at the “Brotfabrik” in Frankfurt, in the November issue of the africa! – magazine.
